Substrates for storing entomopathogenic nematodes (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae, Heterorhabditidae) Scientia Agricola
Andaló,Vanessa; Cavalcanti,Ricardo Sousa; Molina,Juan Pablo; Moino Jr.,Alcides.
The survival of entomopathogenic nematodes under laboratory conditions is low. With the aim of evaluating substrates to extend the survival of entomopathogenic nematodes, suspensions of Heterorhabditis sp. JPM4 and Steinernema carpocapsae All (3,000 IJ mL-1) were added to dirt, fine sand, coarse sand, foam, expanded clay, phenolic foam, agar, corn starch, Plantmax®, and water. The substrates were placed on Petri dishes (5 cm) and kept at 16 ± 1°C. Survival evaluations were made after 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 days, with three replicates. After 180 d, a greater percentage of S. carpocapsae infective juveniles (IJs) were still alive in the foam treatment (57.5%) as compared to other treatments, while expanded clay (28.4%), Plantmax® (9.3%) and phenolic...

Grazing management strategies for massaigrass-forage peanut pastures: 1. dynamics of sward condition and botanical composition R. Bras. Zootec.
Andrade,Carlos Mauricio Soares de; Garcia,Rasmo; Valentim,Judson Ferreira; Pereira,Odilon Gomes.
This study was carried out from October 2002 to December 2003 to evaluate the dynamics of sward condition and botanical composition of a mixed massaigrass (Panicum maximum x P. infestum, cv. Massai) and forage peanut (Arachis pintoi Ac 01) pasture, intermittently stocked at three daily herbage allowance levels (9.0, 14.5 and 18.4% live weight). Sward condition was characterized in each grazing cycle in terms of the pre and post-grazing sward height, forage mass and percentage of bare ground. Botanical composition (grass, legume and weeds) was evaluated before each grazing period. Sward height and forage mass increased linearly with increasing herbage allowance (HA) levels, and higher values were observed during the rainy season. Percentage of bare ground...

Dynamics of sward condition and botanical composition in mixed pastures of marandugrass, forage peanut and tropical kudzu R. Bras. Zootec.
Andrade,Carlos Mauricio Soares de; Garcia,Rasmo; Valentim,Judson Ferreira; Pereira,Odilon Gomes.
This study was carried out to evaluate the dynamics of sward condition and botanical composition of a mixed pasture of marandugrass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), forage peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Mandobi) and tropical kudzu (Pueraria phaseoloides), rotationally stocked at four daily forage allowance levels (6.6, 10.3, 14.3 and 17.9% of live weight). Sward condition was characterized in each stocking cycle by measuring pre- and post-grazing sward height, forage mass and percentage of bare ground. Botanical composition (grass, forage peanut, tropical kudzu and weeds) was evaluated before each stocking period. Swards under smaller forage allowances presented lower height, forage mass and ground cover. This condition favored the growth of forage peanut,...

Les Escherichia Coli potentiellement pathogenes dans l’environnement littoral : cas des STEC et des EPEC ArchiMer
Baliere, Charlotte.
The contamination of coastal areas by potentially pathogenic enteric bacteria is of concern for the sustainability of some uses, such as shellfish farming, recreational shellfish harvesting and bathing. The contamination of these environments may occur through the land-spreading of livestock wastes, animal feces deposited on pastures, wastewaters from slaughterhouses or from municipal wastewater treatment plants. The presence of these bacteria in coastal environment may present a potential risk to human health. In fact, shellfish-borne outbreaks or human infections may occur by the consumption of shellfish from contaminated areas or the ingestion of water during bathing in contaminated waters, respectively. To date, few studies focusing on the presence and...

Non-Linearities and Fractional Integration in the US Unemployment Rate AgEcon
Caporale, Guglielmo Maria; Gil-Alana, Luis A..
This paper proposes a model of the US unemployment rate which accounts for both its asymmetry and its long memory. Our approach, based on the tests of Robinson (1994), introduces fractional integration and nonlinearities simultaneously into the same framework (unlike earlier studies employing a sequential procedure), using a Lagrange Multiplier procedure with a standard limit distribution. The empirical results suggest that the US unemployment rate can be specified in terms of a fractionally integrated process, which interacts with some non-linear functions of the labour demand variables (real oil prices and real interest rates). We also find evidence of a long-memory component. Our results are consistent with a hysteresis model with path dependency rather...

Testing the Order of Integration with Low Power Tests. An Application to Argentine Macro-variables AgEcon
Carrera, Jorge Eduardo; Feliz, Mariano; Panigo, Demian.
The low power of available econometric tests is an important problem in applied research on unit roots and related issues. Based on the principle of methodological triangulation, the problem should be analyzed from different points of view in order to increase the validity of the results. Following this approach a strategy to test the order of integration in time series is presented using a sequence of eleven consolidated tests. In this way it is possible to determine the persistence of shocks, to specify the best strategy for trend-cycle decomposition and to obtain additional information useful for public policies. As an application of the methodology, the integration properties in the main 14 Argentine macroeconomic variables are studied. A...

Monitoring viral contamination in shellfish growing areas ArchiMer
Le Guyader, Soizick; Pommepuy, Monique; Atmar, Robert.
Human and animal fecal wastes and urine contain a large number of different viruses that can enter the environment through the discharge of waste materials from infected individuals. Despite the high diversity of viruses that are introduced into the environment by human fecal pollution, only a few have been recognized to cause disease in association with consumption of contaminated shellfish. Viruses are present in shellfish in very low numbers. Nevertheless, they are present in sufficient quantities to pose a health risk as presented. This low level of contamination has made it necessary to develop highly sensitive viral extraction methods to ensure virus recovery from shellfish tissues. The most common route for accidental contamination is after heavy...

Devenir des virus entériques humains en milieu marin : Apport des VLPs (Virus Like Particles) pour la purification des coquillages ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne.
This work was developed following two research axes: the improvement of norovirus (human and animal strain) and rotavirus detection, and the evaluation of VLPs as a viral substitute for studying their comportment in marine environment. The main point concerning the method optimisation was the development of real-time RT-PCR for norovirus detection. The second part of the work has demonstrated the potential of norovirus and rotavirus VLPs as a viral surrogate as proven by the study of their stability in seawater. As VLPs are non-pathogen particles, the long persistence of rotavirus VLPs in shellfish has been shown in natural conditions (oysters on marine estuaries). The studies of Norwalk virus VLPs attachment to oyster tissues have demonstrated a specific...

Lolium Multiflorum seeds in the soil: II. Longevity under natural conditions Rev. bras. sementes
Maia,Fernanda Costa; Maia,Manoel De Souza; Bekker,Renée M.; Berton,Rogério Previatti; Caetano,Leandro Sebastião.
The interest was the seed longevity dynamics of annual ryegrass in natural conditions as an important tool to explain its dynamics in no tillage systems used in the South of Brazil. The species is commonly managed for natural re-sowing and, in this way, allows cattle grazing with reduced costs during the winter time. In February of 2003, twenty bags of nylon screen containing sterilised soil with 100 seeds in each were randomly buried in the field, 5 cm deep. Around every three or four months, four sacks were exhumed. Seeds were counted and tested using germination and tetrazolium tests. The seeds showed high primary dormancy, which was overcome very fast. After 108, 226, 326, 565 and 732 days of burial there were no significant differences as the secondary...

Leaching of Atrazine in Commercial and Xerogel Formulations in Oxisol Using Bioassay and Chromatographic Methods Planta Daninha
Marchesan,E.D.; Trezzi,M.M.; Vidal,R.A.; Dick,D.P.; Xavier,E..
Mobility of atrazine in soil has contributed to the detection of levels above the legal limit in surface water and groundwater in Europe and the United States. The use of new formulations can reduce or minimize the impacts caused by the intensive use of this herbicide in Brazil, mainly in regions with higher agricultural intensification. The objective of this study was to compare the leaching of a commercial formulation of atrazine (WG) with a controlled release formulation (xerogel) using bioassay and chromatographic methods of analysis. The experiment was a split plot randomized block design with four replications, in a (2 x 6) + 1 arrangement. The main formulations of atrazine (WG and xerogel) were allocated in the plots, and the herbicide...

Residual Activity of Diclosulam Applied to Soybean on Cotton Crop in Succession Planta Daninha
MATTE,W.D.; CAVALIERI,S.D.; PEREIRA,C.S.; IKEDA,F.S.; COSTA,W.B..
ABSTRACT: The application of alternative herbicides to replace glyphosate can affect the succession cropping due to the persistence in the soil. The aim of this work was to evaluate the residual activity of diclosulam applied to a pre-emergence soybean crop on a cotton plant grown in succession. The present study used a randomized complete block design with five replicates and seven doses of diclosulam (0, 2.19, 4.38, 8.75, 17.5, 35 and 70 g a.i. ha-1). The cotton was sown 112 days after application of the herbicide, with accumulated rainfall of 637 mm during the soybean cycle. Variables related to photosynthetic characteristics, phytointoxication, growth, components of production and productivity were evaluated in both crops. Diclosulam did not affect the...

MATTE,W.D.; CAVALIERI,S.D.; PEREIRA,C.S.; IKEDA,F.S.; SHENG,L.Y..
ABSTRACT: Weed resistance to glyphosate in agricultural production systems has led to the need of applying herbicides with different mechanisms of action. However, the persistence of these herbicides in the soil can harm the subsequent crop. This study aimed to assess the effect of the residual activity of the herbicide sulfentrazone applied in pre-emergence of soybean on cotton in succession. The experimental design was a randomized block design with five replications, with seven doses of sulfentrazone (0, 37.5, 75, 150, 300, 600, and 1,200 g ha-1). Cotton was sown at 112 days after herbicide application (DAA), with an accumulated precipitation of 637 mm during soybean cycle. Diagnostic moléculaire de l'origine des contaminations fécales dans l'environnement littoral - Développement de marqueurs Bacteroidales spécifiques de l'hôte ArchiMer
Mieszkin, Sophie.
Human and animal faecal pollution affects environmental water in inland and coastal areas, with negative implications for recreational uses, public safety and shellfish sanitary status due to the presence of enteric pathogens. Starting from 2011, the revised Bathing Water European Directive (2006/7/CE) requires the establishment of bathing water profiles with an inventory and study of the pollution sources likely to affect water quality. The faecal microbiological indicators used in these regulations, Escherichia coli and enteroccoci, cannot distinguish between human and animal faecal contamination. Thus, alternative methods, that focus on target microorganisms such as bacteria belonging to the Bacteroidales order were developed or are being developed to...

Biocontrol capacity of wild and mutant Trichoderma harzianum (Rifai) strains on Rhizoctonia solani 618: effect of temperature and soil type during storage Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Montealegre,Jaime; Valderrama,Luis; Herrera,Rodrigo; Besoaín,Ximena; Pérez,Luz M.
Wild (Th11, Th12 and Th650) and mutant (Th11A80.1, Th12A40.1, Th12C40.1 and Th650-NG7) Trichoderma harzianum strains were stored for 180 days at 5ºC or at 22ºC, in two types of soils. Strains recovered at 90, 120 and 180 days from the two types of soils, retained their full capacity to biocontrol Rhizoctonia solani 618, that produces crown and root rot of tomatoes. Recovery, estimated as colony forming units (cfu) of the wild and mutant strains, showed that all increased their cfu after storage independently of the type of soil and temperature, although kinetic behavior differed among strains. Ratios of recovery after storage in type B soil/ type A soil or at 22ºC/5ºC, higher or lower than one respectively, allowed to establish that Th11 and Th12 were the...
